Winter Flies
Overview
Mischievously self-assured Mára and somewhat eccentric Heduš set out into the frozen wastes in search of adventure – by car, naturally. After all, Mára’s turning fifteen soon. A road movie about the flies that occasionally buzz around even in winter, and a story that tells of the elusive bond of boyhood friendship and the irrepressible desire to experience something, even if you don't exactly know what.
My Opinion : The movies highlight is it’s unrestrained story on a teenagers mind especially in the Czech republic; an area known for it’s conservatism and alt right ideologies. Winter Flies features some solid performances that keep the film going as we embark on an adventure in a stolen car along with two young boys. The film cuts between those nostalgic esque moments back to the present with police investigations and interrogations following the stolen vehicle. There is quite a lot to talk about especially in how extremely well developed these characters are in terms of personality, history, views on life (and girls) and more. They may not be all that likeable, and have a whole lot to learn, but they are well rounded characters overall. The films downfall is it’s lack of end, it’s as if the film just goes on without any closure, most likely a suggestion that we had seen a moment of two peoples lives instead of a movie with a direct beginning and immediate end. It isn’t for everyone, but it’s a heartfelt film about our adolescent years and it presents us with an interesting outlook on how different societal views are reflected on younger children. And it’s lack of political correctness purifies the movie all for the better.
