The Master
Overview
Freddie, a volatile, heavy-drinking veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, finds some semblance of a family when he stumbles onto the ship of Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a new "religion" he forms after World War II.
My Opinion : Hall of fame performances from the likes of Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as well as an interesting character study of a post-traumatic soldier from the war heighten The Master to mountains just short enough to not reach the “masterpiece” status but also high enough that it does not drown in the ocean of its own frustrating lack of a control story. Though one could suggest it deserves a second watching to comprehend its grasp on the subject of Scientology. 82/100
