Wetlands
Overview
Helen is a nonconformist teenage girl who maintains a conflictual relationship with her parents. Hanging out most of her time with her friend Corinna, with whom she breaks one social taboo after another, she uses sex as a way to rebel and break the conventional bourgeois ethic. After an intimate shaving accident, Helen ends up in the hospital where it doesn’t take long before she makes waves. But there she finds Robin, a male nurse who will sweep her off her feet...
My opinion : Wetlands is one of the most visually grotesque films i’ve ever seen, and I loved every second of it. Not only is it a breath of fresh air, but the violence, sexuality, drug usage makes heightens the film to what can be defined as super-realism. We connect with our heroine much more easily because we get to see the truth about womanhood including all its bizareness and intricacies, we get up close and personal, and this including some Fincher esque narration and Greta Gerwig type writing makes this film an insanely fun albeit sometimes hard to watch thrill ride from start to finish and perhaps the most honest, difficult and realistic portrayal of a teenage woman I’ve ever seen in a film. The film is taboo, but it literally gives the finger to many christian traditionalist beliefs and I cannot help but respect. The performances are very well rounded, the cinematography is surprisingly great and the overall pacing is definitely flawed but that is nothing compared to the many qualities it possesses, definitely not for the faint of heart. 92/100
