My opinion : NIGHTCRAWLER (2014) :
The film works not only as a interestingly deep study on human nature but also as a compelling thriller thats as fresh as it is surprisingly effective. The film focuses on Louis Bloom (who is played by Jake Gyllenhaal), a mysterious young insomniac who takes to the nighttime streets of Los Angeles in an attempt to capture the most shocking breaking news. For nearly the entire runtime of the film it contains and preserves its undeniable tension from the get go all the way to a great finale that highlights the film as one of the greatest and most underrated in 2014. It also speaks volume at what kind of man Bloom is, his cold and calculated moves and his bizarre ways of expressing himself are what makes me believe that he could very well be a sociopath who lacks in any form of human emotion, which makes him really good at the job he’s at, or perhaps.. too good? That is the sole drame of the film as it lingers on which leads to a consistently more dangerous and insane territory as the anti heroes drive to capture the rawest form of footage at the scene becomes downright out of order and even maniacal. There are so many good things about movie but one fundamental flaw which I think is what the directors and writers were going for is that the protagonist to me is just too unlikeable. And it only gets worse as the movie progresses which does say something about the effectiveness of a character arc. Anyways the film was great, the acting was most likely in my opinion Jake’s best and most well realized in years, the thriller aspect is ever so present and is fueled by an unrelenting amount of tension and finally we are introduced to one of cinemas most interesting character studies. 9.0/10
