My opinion : Irreversible is in my opinion the most controversial, thought provoking feminist driven film i’ve ever seen, which does not stop it from being an innovative and great film.
Irreversible does exactly what Gaspar Noé wanted, which was to hold nothing back on the violence, sexuality, sinister and horrid aspects of the film for sheer realism. The 2002 film depicts the aftermath of a very traumatic event, and how a single point in time can change everything; this morale is further enhanced as the movie plays in backwards starting from the climax and ending with the very beginning, sort of like memento. We are met with flawed characters in their daily lives and how they’d (or moreover how we’d) react to such a horrible time. Gaspar Noé (SPOILERS) pulled no strings and decided to show us what it felt like to be raped, which is the reason behind the 9 minute long agression sequence between the young beautiful woman Alex M (played by Monica Belluci) and Le Tenia that goes none stop, showing nudity, violence, pain, and is a traumatic experience for some. Viewers are warned at the very beginning that this isn’t your typical film as we are immediately in the height of the gruesome and bloody violence, Gaspar Noé even goes to film the sequences in a stylistic choice that causes vertigo and nausea to its audience, including a 24 Hz noise sequence as its soundtrack which is known to cause distress and anxiety, all in the main goal of causing trauma to the viewer and making them understand whats happening and how horrifying it actually is. All and all this is most certainly not a film for everyone but it captures the beauty of life and the destruction of time, how everything can change in just a few moments, by just one decision, how everything could’ve been different. And as the reverse chronological movie moves on, we start to piece things together, making for a disturbing albeit genuinely interesting experience. I’m not a fan of a lot of feminist driven films because of how they force things sometimes but this film captures everything and is a true force of nature… 7.8/10
