My opinion : High Life does many things differently and faces the concept of exploration in the human psyche differently compared to others films that try to replicate its sci-fi gloire. One could even call it an experimental, advanced study on procreation, humanity, mania and the inevitable end of slowly approaching a black hole, director Claire Denis had a lot to say and used sound, imagery and the integral functionality of it’s actors to construct a complex, ultimately challenging, raw and disturbing idea. One could say the film’s great ambitions are overshadowed with a constant sense of pretentiousness because, despite being unrestrained, this unique approach of making a movie does no good to an audience and spends too much time on the directors ideas instead of advancing the plot. The film doesn’t have three acts, it feels like there isn’t a single mood or change of atmosphere which bored me well after the 45 minute mark. Is it a solidly crafted film with plenty of ideas? Yes but those ideas are somewhat confusing and feel like they’ve just gotten out of Denis’s head and where she barely had the time to actually formulate her ideas and organize them so as to let the audience understand what is going on. Honestly, there isn’t much to offer here, a film thats focused moreover on the interpretation of ideas is no good when it doesn’t have a single other reason to be appreciated for. Giving us few reasons to watch it and a hundred more not to but hey, at least the performances are fantastic. It’s sheer brilliancy and twisted beauty is there, but it’s just as hard to find as a ghost. 5.6/10
